Join us following Shabbat morning services for a discussion with Palestinian Aziz Abu Sarah, co-author of The Future Is Peace: A Shared Journey Across the Holy Land, and Israeli Gili Getz, president of American Friends of Combatants for Peace.

Services will begin at 9:30 am. The discussion will begin between 11:15 and 11:30, followed by Q&A, and kiddush.

Tisha B’Av commemorates the destruction of both Temples, and other times of exile and destruction throughout Jewish history. Gesher | The Bridge Shul and our friends from Temple Adas Israel have traditionally observed this day together, to model the way in which focusing on what we share, rather than on our differences, is an essential part of rebuilding when things fall apart.

Take good care of yourself by joining us for this hands-on workshop on what Jewish texts have to say about the boundaries of life and death, how to choose a health care proxy and have conversations with loved ones, and actual health care directive forms to begin filling out on the spot. This workshop is for people of all ages: having a health care directive and proxy is essential for everyone over the age of 18.

Join Joy Ladin on Zoom for a reading and workshop featuring excerpts from her soon-to-be-published books, Once Out of Nature: Selected Essays on the Transformation of Gender, and Family, her eleventh poetry collection, as jumping-off points for understanding the often-bitter conflicts between different ways of doing gender that have become a major front in America's culture wars, and how approaching those conflicts differently might be a model for bridging other cultural gaps as well. Many religious traditions observe periods of ritualized public lamentation, a counter-cultural practice in contemporary America. Secular society offers contexts for public protest, and for memorializing those killed in battle. We're especially good at public airings of anger and grievance. But public lament seems to have fallen by the wayside.

What do we do with the Book of Lamentations and the prophecy of Jeremiah, sacred scripture to both Christians and Jews? What function do those books serve theologically, emotionally, societally, politically? What happens when a society can’t or won’t acknowledge and grieve loss together? How might lamenting together help us heal some of our anger, woundedness and division?
